“If we are born of the incorruptible then we are surely being blessed not of the corruptible but of the incorruptible even the word of life”
Our birth is a pointer to our blessing, because we are born of the incorruptible and so our blessing also is in the incorruptible. We can not be born incorruptible and be raised with corruptible things and then our blessing comes via the corruptible hence our growth and being blessed will not align with what we are born with. We shall see the process of entering into the blessing of God through the word of God, three things will lead us into it which is clearly stated in God’s word. James started the conversation with not deceiving ourselves to be hearers of the word only and neglect the place of doing the word, scriptures call it “deceiving your own selves”
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Then we saw that James went further to liken such to a man that look at himself in a mirror and then forgets who he was
James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
Then we see the path to being blessed by giving attention to the perfect law of liberty
James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Let’s see this words
- Whoso looketh to the perfect law of liberty:
Now the word of God didn’t place any distinction here it says “whoso” meaning anybody we know that God is not a respecter of persons, so it is whoso look into perfect law of liberty which means the word of God. It’s a perfect word. Clearly David said the word is the law of the Lord is perfect
Psalms 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
You note the word “converting the soul” that’s what James started with when he said to receive with meekness the engrafted word that has the ability to save your souls
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
So David said that law is perfect converting the soul and then James said the word is the perfect law of liberty which saves the soul. It’s all the same. So we understand that the perfect law of liberty is the word of God having ability to convert and to save the soul.
- Continue therein
Jesus said to His disciples that he that continue in My words is My disciple indeed
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
This same word is what James used to tell us that whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continue therein, so we understand that we must learn not just to receive the word but to also continue in it. For this was the same word Apostle Paul gave to Timothy to continue
1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the DOCTRINE; CONTINUE IN THEM: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
Doctrine means teaching and teaching comes by the word. We must learn to continue in the word.
- Not being a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work
These I see as as a step-by-step method into the blessing of God through God’s Word. This is the secret into being blessed through the word. This sounds as though he took us back to what he was saying, when he compared the man that hear the word but does not do the word to a man that behold himself in the mirror and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. Note the word “forgetteth what manner of man he was” now this to me means: the mirror we understand that it is the word of God and then it says “what man of manner of man that he was” there is a revelation we receive at the meat of the word, which by this we must not behave like man that look at the mirror and forget the manner of man he was which means there was something he saw but as soon as he left the front of the mirror he forgets that thing. This is what was said in the parable of the sower as a man that quickly receives the word and then quickly leave the Word because it has not gained root in them.
Matthew 13:20 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and IMMEDIATELY RECEIVE IT WITH JOY.
13:21 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. THEY FALL AWAY AS SOON AS they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.
This again mean to be a forgetful doer is not to allow the word to have a deep root in us. That’s why scriptures says it has to dwell richly in us.
Colossians 3:16 LET THE WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN YOU RICHLY IN ALL WISDOM; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
We see clearly that how not to be a forgetful hearer is to allow the word to dwell in us richly. No wonder David said he hid the word of God in his heart
Psalms 119:11 THY word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
He told us also about the attitude of righteous man to the word
Psalms 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
It’s in the keeping of the word in the heart like you cast your bread upon the waters and you can find it. The water here is our hearts, for which we shall find the word as we keep them.
- This man shall be blessed in his deed.
Very clearly Joshua showed us a straight way into this by saying
Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have GOOD SUCCESS.
Remember James called it the “perfect law of liberty” and Joshua said this book of the law shall be depart out of thy mouth, this show to us again how not to be a forgetful hearer and it says meditation upon the word day and night is what brings not just success but good success and then David agreed to this by making us to understand who truly a blessed man is
Psalms 1:1 BLESSED IS THE MAN that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
1:2 But (that man) his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
So we see that the process of being blessed through the word is upon this: looking into the perfect law of liberty, continuing the word, not being a forgetful hearer; by hiding the word in our hearts, meditating upon the word day and night and this will all bring us to being blessed, to have good success and to prosper. These all tells that you must hear the word, believe the word until you have faith enough do the word. Actually faith comes to do the word, just like faith comes by hearing. Unless we develop a hearing ear, we may not walk the faith walk. For our faith to be properly developed, we must become diligent hearers of God’s word. For us to thereby grow in faith and to be blessed, then we must be consistent doer of the faith in God’s word. That’s how it works.
