“The true test of a believer is a listening ear and a following heart for the Lord Jesus Christ”

In the last series, we looked at what Jesus says about oath, there we saw what Jesus says on oath how that He expect that we should not swear by anything, but that our yes should be yes and our no should be no. We shall continue this series by looking at

“Retaliation is the evil response of the heart towards evil that is being done”

Like we have seen that Jesus will bring the way things were in the old times into what heaven is saying at the moment, this tell to us to always judge after the counsel of what God is saying at the moment and not to judge all things before time. Now let’s see very quickly what has been in the old times

Matthew  5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

This was the way to approach retaliation in the old times of the law and that’s how men lived and we saw it truly in

Exodus  21:23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,

21:24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

21:25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

It’s clear that things work by “do me, I do you” response such that when you hit my eyes I hit your eyes, so it’s was all by retaliation that men are fond of but we see in our time that we can suffer to even be defrauded and to take wrong

1 Corinthians  6:7  Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

Now let’s see Jesus response to this retaliation

Matthew  5:39 BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. (NLT)

“Retaliation is the hasty response of the soul, neglecting the inward response within through love.”

Clearly, Jesus says do not resist an evil person! When you receive a portion of slap on your right cheek, offer the person the other cheek instead of the old time way of responding back with a slap. This could be done when we are being slapped and really there are different measures of slap, someone might be offend you and the next thing is not to retaliate but to turn the other cheek, and the other cheek here is to turn the side of love to the person and not to retaliate, the anger of hurt is very strong and it can make is to sin. The wise way to approach the world is to go by way of foolishness  which is to allow the love of God to rule us. Then Jesus went further by saying

5:40 And IF ANY MAN will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

“Love travels farther than retaliation and it is the outward response that disengage the force of retaliation”

We see clearly how the Lord expect us to respond to hurt or any form of evil done to us, when we are sue to court and our shirt is taken we should offer even our cloth, when a man compelled us to go a mile we should go twice and to give folks that ask of us. The truth is, the strength to avoid retaliation is love and it has the strength to travel far than retaliation could go.

In the next series we shall look at what Jesus says on LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.
