“We must always be moved at the word of the Lord because that is how to live”

In the last series, we looked at LUST where we discussed on what Jesus said that in old time you heard that thou shall not commit adultery and then He says that adultery is committed already when you look at a woman lustfully in your heart. So He opened us to how adultery or fornication takes root not just in having sex but it’s an engagement that explore from the heart. We shall continue this series by looking at

“Divorce means to break from the covenant of God that what He said about Himself and the church to be one is not true”

So we observed that Jesus was comparing some things that have been said in the law or in the old times to what He is saying now and then deal with them from the root and show how things really are. Let’s see…

Matthew  5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall PUT AWAY his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

To put away here means to divorce. We see that Jesus was referring to what has being before time that whosoever shall put away his wife  let him give her a writing of divorcement. But we need to understand why this was like that, the Pharisees came with a question to tempt Jesus

Matthew  19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, TEMPTING HIM, and saying unto him, IS IT LAWFUL FOR A MAN TO PUT AWAY HIS WIFE FOR EVERY CAUSE?

This question is serious… “Put away his wife for EVERY CAUSE” that means whatever may happen one can just put away his wife for every cause at any slight mistake.

Matthew  19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that HE WHICH MADE THEM AT THE BEGINNING MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,

19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

So Jesus took them back to the beginning of what God did by making them One, so it was GOD Who actually joined them together and truly in the beginning with Adam and Eve nothing put them asunder even when they fell they still stayed together. You need to trust the Pharisees they will ask more questions and then defend it with the law.

Matthew  19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

Now this is what brought about our opening text. So the Pharisees knew that Moses wrote the book of Genesis, they felt Moses should be aware of the beginning, why did he tell us to divorce then? Of course Jesus replied by telling us the reason Moses told them to do that

19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the HARDNESS OF YOUR HEARTS suffered you to put away your wives: BUT FROM THE BEGINNING IT WAS NOT SO.

Jesus then expanded it more that it was because of the hardness of your hearts that is why Moses told you to give your wife a writing of divorcement but it was not so in the beginning and what was in the beginning is what matters. Now what does Jesus have to say again

Matthew  5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Jesus said this is what I have to say unto you, WHOSOEVER SHALL DIVORCE HIS WIFE, SAVING FOR THE CAUSE OF FORNICATION… the word saving means EXCEPT or BESIDES, so it means EXCEPT FOR THE CAUSE OF FORNICATION and the word FORNICATION here means ADULTERY, but don’t run with that because Jesus actually said when you put her away you cause her to commit adultery, which could be well see by WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, CAUSE HER TO COMMIT ADULTERY so in a sense by having a  letter of divorcement for your wife actually means you cause her to commit adultery, you open her up to it and it will hang on you that you do so, not only that she won’t be able to marry again likewise you  except death comes in which can not be prayed for, the scripture further said even if anybody marry her the man has committed adultery. Now you will understand why the disciples say “if the case of a man be so with his wife then it is not good to marry”

Matthew  19:10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

Jesus told them it is a hard saying for no man can receive it. But does this nullify marriage? No! This is because God actually said in the beginning that it is not good for man to be alone

Genesis  2:18 And the LORD GOD SAID, IT IS NOT GOOD that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

To be alone means not to marry, it is not good except He gives you that gift of the eunuch and it’s for a reason… Service!

Matthew  19:11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

19:12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

Finally on the issue of divorce, we understand by the word of God that when we are joined together as husband and wife God witnessed our joining even our wedding vows and that’s what makes it serious and we understand by God’s word that God does the joining

Malachi 2:14 You cry out, “Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?” I’ll tell you why! BECAUSE THE LORD WITNESSED THE VOWS YOU AND YOUR WIFE MADE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows. (NLT)

The word of God makes it clear that one of God’s purpose for marriage is to have godly children and then saw that God  said he hate it divorce!

Malachi 2:15 Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? GODLY CHILDREN FROM YOUR UNION. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.

This means our marriages are to bring about the purposes of God, to have godly children out of our union. This also speak to the wife, do not be unfaithful to your husband, if by any means you deny each other what is due to one another then come together to fulfill the desire of your husband or your wife. So God hates the divorce!

In the next series we shall look at what Jesus have to say on OATHS. Thanks for reading, you can drop your comments or questions on this topic. Please do a post subscription on our blog by putting up your email address on our blog for updates. Thank you!
