“My sheep hear My voice and they follow Me” – Jesus Christ

In the last series, we looked at RETALIATION, we studied what Jesus said on retaliation how that we need to respond to the evil done to us by going farther than retaliation, responding with love. We shall end this series by looking at what Jesus says about

  • LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

“The way to be wise in this world is to be foolish, and our foolish response in the face of the world grants us access into the depths of wisdom in the face of Jesus”

Are we to love our enemies? Why should we love our enemies? The devil is our enemy should we also love him? These questions may run in our minds as we take on this study, again let’s see what was said in the old times and what Jesus says now about our enemies

Matthew  5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

We see Jesus saying that it the old times you’re told to love your neighbour which do you good always but hate your enemy. He went further to say

    Matthew  5:44 BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Let us do a good listing of what Jesus expect us to do to our enemy

    1. Love your enemy
    2. Bless them that curse you
    3. Do good to them that hate you
    4. Pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you

Now the four list here tells what an enemy is and what they do which are they hate, the curse, despitefully use us, and they persecute us. In all this Jesus gave our response to all the phases by which our enemy may show up which will nullify the old time response to our enemy which is to hate them but now to love them afterall. We then need to answer the question

    • WHY DO I NEED TO LOVE MY ENEMY?

“Our response towards our enemy project our true identity with the Father”

We always reflect our identity by our actions and reflection to things. God always have a purpose for the things which He tell us to do, the reason He said to love your enemy is

Matthew  5:45 THAT YE MAY BE THE CHILDREN OF YOUR FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

We see that Jesus gave a clear reason we need love our enemy, so that we may be the children of our Father which is in heaven. This tells that unless we love our enemy and do what the Lord say to do to them, we may not truly be identified as the children of the Father which is in heaven. This is because our Father cause His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and He send rain to the just and the unjust. It’s possible by His power not to allow the wicked to see His sun and rain but He allowed it to fall on them all. So this proves to us that God love not only the righteous but He also love the unrighteous by allowing His sun and rain on them, which tells that if God is like this them we must be also in like manner.

    • THE COMPARISON

“What difference have we, when we live to do the same thing that unbelievers do?”

What we saw Jesus say next is this,

Matthew  5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

We saw that He said if we love the folks that love us what reward do we have,  even the publicans will always do that. It’s the normal response to life to give back what you received but the Lord expects us to live by His life such that His church can be differentiated from the world. It occur to me that God expects us to do more than just what a normal person will do, He expects us to do what He will rather do. This also tells that the way the Lord expects us to respond in a way that even the unbelievers can not respond like that. So therefore the way to perfection is by doing what God will do by loving our enemy irrespective of what our enemy does.

Matthew  5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

This will lead do perfection as w do eat the Father does.

    • ARE WE TO LOVE THE DEVIL SINCE HE IS OUR ENEMY?

Clearly we see the Bible refer to the devil is our enemy and he is the one that shall be put to death last.

1 Corinthians  15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

So we see enemies there and then enemy, but the enemy is the devil we see him in operation in the sowing of tares

Matthew  13:39  THE ENEMY THAT sowed them IS THE DEVIL; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

And we saw him being called the prince of this world and then his followers princes of this world

John  14:30  Hereafter I will not talk much with you: FOR THE PRINCE OF THIS WORLD cometh, and hath nothing in me.

1 Corinthians  2:6  Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the PRINCES OF THIS WORLD, that come to nought:

1 Corinthians  2:8  Which none of the PRINCES OF THIS WORLD knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

And then we saw him being called the god of this world

2 Corinthians  4:4 In whom THE GOD OF THIS WORLD hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

And then Jesus said a friendship with this world is an enmity against God, a man can become an enemy of God by being a friend to the world

James  4:4  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the FRIENDSHIP OF THE WORLD IS ENMITY WITH GOD? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

So we now understand when scriptures says not to love this world

1 John  2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. IF ANY MAN LOVE THE WORLD, THE LOVE OF THE FATHER IS NOT IN HIM.

So it’s clear that we can’t love the devil! He’s an eternal enemy! He’s the enemy of God so he becomes our enemy too. God bless you!
